FASTRACKS, TRANSPORTATION ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT,
DENVER UNION STATION AND THE 16TH STREET MALL
Learn about market trends that create opportunities for
transit oriented and mixed use development, and the
challenges of designing, obtaining approvals, financing
and constructing TOD's.
Moderator: Bill James, MAI of James
Real Estate Services, Inc. and Board of Directors, RTD
Bill Sirois of RTD will describe the
FasTracks light rail and commuter rail system being
built by the Regional Transportation District and the
role the RTD plays in transportation oriented
development near its transit stations.
Lynn Crist, MAI of Mile High Development
will describe the opportunities and challenges that a
private developer faces in developing mixed use real
estate project at and near transit stops using her
companies proposed development at the FasTracks stations
at East Yale Avenue and the University of Denver.
Melinda Pollack of Enterprise Community Partners
will describe the opportunities and challenges of
development of affordable housing as a component of
transportation oriented and mixed use developments at
transit stations, particularly with the assistance of
government programs.
John Desmond of the Downtown Denver Partnership
will speak about the plans to rehabilitate and enhance
the 16th Street Mall by the Downtown Denver Partnership
(DDP), the City and County of Denver, the Regional
Transportation District and the Downtown Denver Business
Improvement District (BID). He will describe the 30
year history of the Mall, the roles of the BID, DDP,
City and RTD, some background about DDP and the BID, and
how the mall ties into the Denver Union Station project.
Frank Cannon of Union Station Neighborhood
Company will describe the redevelopment
underway of Denver Union Station as the hub of the
FasTracks mass transit system. He will give a brief
history of the acquisition and planning process (master
plan, master plan supplement, EIS, etc.), and the
reasons for a Master Developer selection and describe
the Public/Private Partnership for the Denver Union
Station redevelopment including the Master Developer,
the public agency partners, and the Denver Union Station
Project Authority. Frank will provide an overview of
the transportation infrastructure program, the public
space framework, and the anticipated development program
of DUS, the finance structure and the anticipated
project schedule.
